Oriental Lodge No. 9371

Brief Lodge History

Oriental Lodge is the brainchild of the late W. Bro. Peter Chen MBE. It was set up mainly to recruit members from the local Chinese and Asian communities into Freemasonry. To help with fund raising for this new Lodge, a number social events were organised and they were well supported by the brethren with their families and friends from Provinces of Northumberland and Durham.

Oriental Lodge was consecrated on Tuesday 29th May 1990 in Corbridge Road Masonic Hall at 3.30 p.m. and its Consecration Banquet was held in the Palace Garden Restaurant, Stowell Street, Newcastle upon Tyne at 6.30 p.m.

The Consecration Officer was R. W. Bro. John Sherwood Stephenson, the Provincial Grand Master of Northumberland. At the ceremony, the 19 members of the Consecrating Team were made Honorary Members of the Lodge.

There were 25 founders  and the sponsoring Lodge was St. Gabriel Lodge No. 2995. The Founding Master was W. Bro. Peter A. S. Chen PProvSGD of Hextoldesham Lodge No. 5577. The Founding Senior Warden was W. Bro. Tom A. Foo, a Past Master and the Founding Junior Warden was W. Bro. John Y. Chan PProvGReg; both from St. Gabriel Lodge No. 2995.

The Oriental Lodge’s logo which was designed by the Founding Junior Warden, has 2 Chinese characters in the centre which mean ‘Oriental’. The Lodge’s motto consists of 4 Chinese characters meaning ‘The Bridge of Friendship’. See below:
